Ruby Pilven is a Ballarat born ceramic artist known for her bold, colourful porcelain and stoneware pieces enriched with highlights of gold lustre. She creates both functional and decorative works that celebrate pattern, colour, and surface, bringing a sense of joy and playfulness into everyday life.
Influenced from an early age by her potter parents, Janine and Peter Pilven, Ruby grew up immersed in clay and the rhythms of the ceramic studio. Ruby draws inspiration from her natural environment, the shifting tones of the Australian landscape, as well as from the history of ceramics, referencing ancient pottery traditions that she reinterprets with a distinctly contemporary twist. She often explores the Japanese technique of nerikomi, layering and slicing coloured clays into striking compositions.
Her work embraces the tactile and the visual: cups, bowls, and plates that enliven daily rituals, alongside decorative and sculptural forms that command attention in their own right. Each piece is intended to be both functional and expressive, objects that radiate energy and invite connection.
