In the Fires of Continuity: Ceramic Dialogues at Grafton Regional Gallery
It’s a very dry, hot early December morning in 2025 and I’m driving south from Byron Bay on Bundjalung country to attend the opening of two of the most anticipated exhibitions in the Australian ceramic calendar. The exhibitions at Grafton Regional Gallery – ATEMPORAL: The Animated Vessel by Avital Sheffer and FIRED INTO BEING: The Enduring Legacy of Alan Peascod – represent a compelling intergenerational dialogue within contemporary Australian ceramics. Brilliantly conceived and curated by Pedram Khosronejad, the exhibitions are not merely a presentation of two discrete practices but a carefully orchestrated conversation about materiality, cultural heritage, and the narrative potential of clay. Together, the exhibitions illuminate how technical mastery, cultural resonance, and formal innovation converge to create vessels that are both historically grounded and contemporaneously relevant. The exhibitions also invite a deeper reflection on how clay functions as both material and metaphor in the hands of makers whose projects traverse time, culture, and memory.
