Katy Schimert at Derek Eller Gallery, New York City

As one entered the main gallery space to see nine substantial sculptures of curvy standing slabs by Katy Schimert, the whole visual field seemed to be in motion. The show was titled Niagara, linking the works to the famous waterfall in western New York state, where she grew up. Several individual works were named after segments of it, such as Horseshoe Falls. But the essence of this body of work is not so particular: it does not so much picture a given site as evoke fluidity.
