Making Space
The French philosopher Gaston Bachelard once wrote of how we invest space with meaning. He introduced the concept of ‘topoanalysis’ a psychological study of the sites of our intimate lives. Though formulated in the last century, Bachelard’s ideas on how we retrieve experience through space and how such memories are entwined in the present, remain potent. His concept of ‘topophilia’ (bond with our environment) can be applied to any of those spaces we make our own and in which we daydream. The workshops as well as the vessels of potters are such spaces.
