If I had to make a general statement about the ceramics currently so prominent in New York City, I would cite large scale, bright color and heavy texture as the preferred options. None of those characterize the work of Marie Herwald Hermann in her recent show at Broadway Gallery in the Tribeca arts neighborhood. In the modest-size Project Room in the gallery’s basement, she showed just five works, all dated 2025, two on the floor and three on the walls. The works were measured, reductive, subtle in both color and material contrasts.
