Protoclay: A Potter’s Inquiry into Fired Granite

This article’s theme outlines two aspects of my adventure of firing granite rocks as if they were very thick stoneware: one aspect covers some techniques/procedures I came upon as I fired the rocks, the other touches on the use of the ‘finished product’ of these firings. In this regard, I came to see that these fired rocks could portray certain ideas and emotive images in forms I enjoyed as symbols. All of the pieces presented, were developed between the years 2000 and 2010. This has not been a straight path.1
