We make pots and ceramic sculpture for many reasons more important than correcting their faults. In some instances the best work can have various technical defects. There is an invisible element with the objects we make, not associated with their physicality. At some point when making pots long enough you realize it’s not about technique or making perfect pots, it’s about the messages they convey. A well designed and executed coffee cup is easy to use and clean. It stacks in the kitchen cabinet efficiently but there is something else occurring on another level. It’s the cup we instinctively reach for in the morning and call our “favorite cup”. Our work is more than the sum of its parts. What is being said when working with clay? I like to think of pots as messages in a bottle that at some point will be picked up and read.
