A recent exhibition at the Henry Art Gallery of the University of Washington in Seattle sought to trace ceramics’ origins, in primordial mud and dirt. This is done by spot-lighting several artists making objects and installations that explore ancestral and indigenous associations to their respective cultures. Founded in 1923, the Henry Art Gallery is the oldest public art museum in the State of Washington. As such, with its ties since 1927 to the University of Washington, ‘the Henry’ has a history of displaying innovative works of ceramic design and sculpture largely associated with faculty and students at the School of Art on its campus.
