Woodfiring at the Top End
Exuding abstract warmth in form and finish and a strong sense of expressive narrative, emma Gela’s entry into Gab Titui Cultural Centre’s annual Indigenous Art Award of 2013 on Waiben (Thursday Island, Australia) came as a surprise. Torres Strait Islander, Gela’s Karr Urn (or Parrot Fish Urn) featured an elegantly refined, delicately decorated, woodfired lidded vessel with an engaging and personal story behind it.
