Ian Jones (Australia)

I have been involved with wood firing since the early 1970s after developing a passion for the surfaces of the works from medieval Japanese ceramic centres such as Bizen and Shigaraki. I realised that the anagama was the appropriate kiln for these works when I was involved with a firing with Mike Dodd in 1978, and started building my first anagama in the mid 1980s.  This type of kiln has guided my work since then, and my pots have been an exploration of the interaction between clay flame and ash that this style of kiln enables.
